Preserved moss and more specifically moss wall has become a popular choice in interior design and decor due to its natural beauty and low maintenance requirements. But we know preserved moss is still a blurry topic for a lot of people so we’re here to help answer the most common questions about it!
1. What is preserved moss?
Preserved moss is real moss that undergoes a preservation process to maintain its natural appearance and texture without requiring maintenance like live plants. The preservation process involves treating the moss with glycerin and other natural compounds to replace its moisture content. This effectively halts its growth and ensures the moss retains its soft, vibrant, and natural appearance.
2. How long does preserved moss last?
One of the key advantages of preserved moss is its remarkable longevity. When properly cared for, preserved moss can last several years, making it a cost-effective and a sustainable alternative to live plants! Unlike live plants, preserved moss doesn’t require water, sunlight, or regular maintenance but be careful! Some factors such as exposure to direct sunlight, humidity levels, and handling can affect its lifespan. We don’t recommend placing preserved moss in areas with high humidity or direct sunlight because it can cause it to deteriorate more quickly.
3. How to care for preserved moss?
Taking care of preserved moss is honestly very simple, but a few precautions will help you extend its lifespan and keep it looking its best:
- Avoid direct sunlight: while preserved moss doesn’t need sunlight to survive, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and deterioration over time. Opt for indirect light or low-light areas.
- Control humidity: preserved moss thrives in environments with moderate humidity. Extremely dry or overly humid conditions can impact its appearance and texture. Aim for a humidity level between 40% and 60%.
- Minimal handling: touching preserved moss frequently can lead to oils from your skin accumulating on the surface, potentially causing discoloration or damage. Handle it sparingly and with clean hands.
- Dust removal: gently remove dust and debris using a soft brush or compressed air. Please do not use water or liquid cleaners, as they can negatively affect the preservation process.
- Regular inspection: periodically check for any signs of deterioration, fading, or mold growth. If you notice any issues, make adjustments to the moss’s environment accordingly.
